If this is the first time that your home or auto has been damaged by a storm or tornado, you’re not alone. After the shock of the event is over and you report the claim, you probably wonder, now what? It’s common to feel overwhelmed and uncertain, not knowing what to do next.

Here are some tips for the early days of post-storm life.

Prevent further damage to your property.  If there is a hole in your roof, tarp the area as best you can.  If window glass is broken, board up the window.  If the electricity is out, move your frozen foods to a cooler or a friend’s freezer.

Take photos to inventory the damage.  Don’t forget small items, like towels, dishes, and clothes.  They can add up.

Ask about your deductible.  A deductible is the amount that you will pay for a claim.  Knowing how much cash you are responsible to pay will give you time to plan for the outlay.

Hire a reputable contractor.   Beware of supposed contractors who promise you fast response and ask you to sign a contract.  Read our separate article on storm scammers.

Know what your insurance covers.  If you are unable to live in your home because of the damage, ask your agent about coverage to live elsewhere (called Loss of Use).  If your car is undriveable, ask about rental car coverage.  If trees are down, ask what coverage limit your policy provides.

Call us any time, 419-241-5133. We are here to walk you through those early days and provide guidance on your next steps.  Especially call us before you sign a contract with a contractor that you do not know.  We have the claims experience to help you make the right decisions.
