Mold is more than just an eyesore — it can pose serious health risks and lead to costly property damage if left unchecked. One of the most common causes of mold growth is moisture intrusion, which can result from leaky roofs, poor ventilation, plumbing issues, or even storm damage.
Because mold often develops slowly, insurance coverage for mold damage can be tricky. In many standard homeowners insurance policies, mold remediation is only covered if it resulted because of a covered peril — such as a burst pipe, sudden roof leak due to a storm, or accidental overflow from an appliance. Conversely, if mold is caused by long-term neglect, humidity issues, or poor maintenance, the damage is usually not covered.
For example, if a roof leak goes unnoticed for months and causes mold buildup in the attic, your claim could be denied for lack of proper upkeep. On the other hand, if a pipe bursts suddenly and mold appears as a result, you’re more likely to have coverage. To reduce the risk of mold and a denied insurance claim:
Regularly inspect and maintain your roof, plumbing, and ventilation systems.
Address any leaks or water damage immediately.
Policy coverages differ between carriers, so we invite you to contact us if you’d like to discuss how your policy would respond to a mold claim. Better to know in advance than to be surprised at the time of a loss.
