Planning a road trip is exciting, but it’s important to ensure your auto insurance covers you as you cross state lines. Here’s what you need to know:
1. Coverage in Other States
Most U.S. auto insurance policies cover all 50 states, so your policy will automatically extend to your road trip destination without adjustments. However, there are a few nuances you should know.
2. State Minimum Liability Requirements
States have different minimum liability limit requirements. Your policy will automatically adjust to meet the higher liability limits of the state you're visiting. For example, if you drive from Ohio to Maine, your limits will temporarily increase to match Maine’s higher requirements.
3.No-Fault vs. At-Fault States
Some states follow a no-fault system, meaning that, in an accident, each driver is responsible for damages to his/her vehicle. In at-fault states, the party responsible for the accident covers all damages.
Additionally, states with no-fault insurance typically have coverages that at-fault states do not, such as Personal Injury Protection (PIP). Again, your policy will automatically extend the state-required coverages while you travel through the state.
4. Rental Cars
Your existing auto insurance may extend to rental cars but check with your agent to confirm coverage details before renting.
5. International Road Trips
U.S. auto insurance typically covers you in Canada but not in Mexico. If traveling to Mexico, you will need additional coverage from a Mexican provider.
Before you head out, review your coverage and check with your agent to ensure you are road trip-ready. Safe travels!
