As October rolls in and daylight hours grow shorter, excavation contractors face an increased risk of jobsite theft and vandalism. With less light and more opportunity for after-hours activity, construction sites become prime targets for stolen equipment, tools, and materials. For excavation businesses, these types of losses aren’t just inconvenient — they’re expensive and can delay projects.

Here's how to stay ahead of the risk and make sure your business is protected both physically and financially.

Smart Prevention Measures

While no jobsite is completely theft-proof, a few strategies can go a long way:

  • Secure your site with fencing, lighting, and cameras. Well-lit areas are less attractive to thieves. Portable motion-activated lights and cameras with remote access can help monitor after-hours activity.

  • Implement strict tool and equipment check-out protocols. Keep daily logs of what comes and goes and who’s responsible for it.

  • Use locks and GPS tracking devices on high-value equipment, trailers, and fuel tanks.

  • Schedule regular site checks when projects are paused or nearing completion. Having a presence, even if brief, discourages unwanted visitors.

  • Limit access with locked gates and secure storage containers for smaller tools and materials.

Insurance Protection That Keeps You Covered

Even with strong security measures, theft and vandalism can still happen. That’s where your insurance comes in. A standard commercial package policy may not cover stolen tools or vandalized machinery. To fully protect your business, consider:

  • Inland Marine Insurance for tools, equipment, and materials in transit or on-site

  • Builders Risk Insurance to protect building materials during construction

  • Equipment Breakdown and Scheduled Equipment Coverage for high-value assets

  • Now is a great time to review your current coverage to make sure your limits reflect today’s equipment values and that there are no gaps in protection.
