What is the difference between my agent, the insurance company and an adjuster?

Your agent is the person that represents you.  We at Knight Crockett Miller act as the intermediary between you and the insurance company.   We are not employees of the insurance company; you, our client, pay our salaries.  Therefore, we act as your voice to the insurance company.  In a “direct writer” situation (a company that deals directly with the client without an agent), you have no “voice”--you deal with company employees, and if you don’t like something, you have no recourse.

The insurance company is the organization that actually writes the policy and pays the claims.  The insurance company also sets the prices, the underwriting rules, and the coverage offerings.

The adjuster is typically an employee of the insurance company (although sometimes he is contracted by the company).  This person settles your claims and interprets the policy’s coverages for your claim.

As your agent, we talk to both the company and the adjuster on your behalf.  Often, because of our relationship, we can accomplish for you what you couldn’t on your own.  This is the benefit of  having us as your representative.
